Indigo is an organic natural dye extracted from the leaves of certain plants, Indigofera tinctoria, native to the tropics, notably the Indian subcontinent.
Natural dyes are obtained mostly from plants, at times from insects and shells; colors are extracted by boiling or steaming. They have fastness properties, such as fastness to light. They are often referred to as ‘alive’ and will continue to bleed and fade, endlessly. This is all part of nature's cycle. The indigo vat used to dye many of our pieces is 10 feet deep and is fed constantly.
Remember to treat your indigo pieces by washing gently by hand separate from anything else and hanging to dry in the shade as direct sunlight will fade them.
Enjoy the unique beauty of this natural process!
