Mudcloth originated in northern Africa, specifically from MALI where this piece is from, in the Western Sahara region. In this case the cloth one full hand woven piece, then dyed in indigo, using a shibori technique Patterns, which each have cultural, historic and geographic significance, are painted onto the cloth with mud and then washed, dried in the sun.
